Mardi Gras Time Again!

February 12, 2024

KING CAKE - There is more to the Story!

Many people traditionally celebrate Mardi Gras this time of year!  But do they really know what they are celebrating?!

Fat Tuesday is 2/13/24.  Ash Wednesday is 2/14/24.

I found the below description interesting and well said!  And I thought who better to get it from than a Cajun Catholic who felt it his duty to share on Facebook.

I believe what was shared, so I wanted to pass it on to you:

Did you know…

In the 1800’s MARDI GRAS was adopted by the Catholic Church.

*Mardi Gras, in French means “Fat Tuesday”.  It’s called Fat Tuesday because when this tradition started, they didn’t want the meat to go bad during lent, so they would cook it all and have a feast.

*Lent is a time for fasting, continuous prayer to atone sin and to draw closer to God. Which brings me to the king cake.

*The baby in the king cake represents the baby Jesus. Trying to find the baby, is like searching for Jesus.

*The dough is twisted and in a circular shape to represent the crown of thorns Jesus wore on his head.

*Colors of the king cake: Purple= Justice, Green= Faith and Gold = Power.

*The cake itself, represents the three wise men who brought gifts to baby Jesus.

*Last but not least, the masks. This was so everyone could celebrate together. You could not tell the wealthy from the lower class.

That my friends is the end of my history lesson!
